Three ways Netflix is billed in Australia
In Australia, Netflix runs three billing routes and each one has a different cancellation path:
- Direct — signed up at netflix.com, charge on your statement reads NETFLIX.COM. Cancel inside Netflix's own account page.
- Telstra or Optus — Netflix appears as a line on your telco's monthly bill, often as part of an entertainment add-on. You must cancel inside the telco's account.
- App-store billing — set up via the Netflix iOS app (Apple) or Android app via Google Play. Charge reads APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE *. The Netflix website will not show a cancel button.
Cancelling in the wrong place does nothing — you'll still be charged on the next cycle. So step one is always: open your bank or card statement and read the exact merchant name on the Netflix charge.
Cancel direct (charge reads NETFLIX.COM)
On a web browser:
- Sign in at netflix.com.
- Click your profile icon (top right) → Account.
- Under Membership & Billing, click Cancel Membership.
- Click Finish Cancellation.
On the Netflix mobile app:
- Tap My Netflix (bottom right).
- Tap the menu icon (top right).
- Choose Account → Cancel membership → Finish cancellation.
You'll see a confirmation banner immediately and receive a confirmation email within minutes. Access continues to the end of the current paid period — Netflix does not refund the unused days, but you keep the full month you paid for.
Cancel Netflix on a Telstra bill
Telstra has bundled Netflix in various plans over the years — sometimes included free, sometimes as a paid extra. Either way the path is:
- Open the My Telstra app or sign in at telstra.com.au.
- Tap the Account tab.
- Tap Manage → Subscriptions.
- Find Netflix in the list of active subscriptions and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm in the pop-up.
If Netflix is included in your plan as a bundled benefit (rather than a separately-billed line item), cancelling it changes your plan — and may remove any associated bundle discount. The screen will warn you before you confirm. If you're not sure, ring Telstra on 13 22 00 before cancelling so they can explain the impact on the plan price.
Cancel Netflix on an Optus bill
Optus's path is slightly less consistent than Telstra's. The fastest method:
- Sign in to the My Optus app or your Optus account.
- Find Subscription add-ons / Entertainment add-ons in your plan details.
- Locate Netflix and select Cancel or Remove.
If the cancel option is hidden — which happens with some bundled plans — the fastest route is the Optus online chat or ringing customer service on 133 937. An Optus agent can remove Netflix from your account on the spot. Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period.
Cancel Netflix billed via Apple or Google Play
If your bank statement shows APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE *… for the Netflix charge:
- Apple: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Netflix → Cancel Subscription.
- Google Play: Play Store → tap your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Netflix → Cancel subscription.
The Netflix account page will not show a cancel button — Apple and Google control the billing. After cancelling through the right store, Netflix access continues to the end of the period the App Store / Play Store last charged for.
After cancelling
A real cancellation produces:
- A confirmation screen with an access-until date.
- A confirmation email within minutes.
- A subscription status that reads Cancelled or Membership ends on… when you check the account 24 hours later.
You keep Netflix until that date with no further charges. Profiles, watch history and recommendations are preserved for 24 months — so if you restart within that window, everything resumes exactly as it was.
