Step 1 — Find out who charges you (this determines everything)
Netflix is one of the most common subscriptions people accidentally cancel in the wrong place. The service you watch and the company that takes the money are often different. Before you touch anything, open your bank or credit-card statement and read the exact merchant name on the Netflix line:
| Charge reads | Where to cancel | |---|---| | NETFLIX.COM | Netflix's own website or app | | APPLE.COM/BILL | Apple — Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions | | GOOGLE * Netflix | Google Play Store — Payments & subscriptions | | Your telco name (Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) | Inside your wireless account | | XFINITY, COMCAST | Xfinity account → Apps & Subscriptions |
If you cancel on the Netflix website when Apple or Google is billing you, nothing will happen — you'll still be charged. Netflix's Account page simply won't show the cancel button when billing is managed by a third party.
Step 2 — Cancel on Netflix directly (billed by Netflix)
This is the most common case — Netflix bills you directly via credit card, debit card, or PayPal.
On a web browser:
- Go to netflix.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Account.
- Under the Membership & Billing section, click Cancel Membership.
- Click Finish Cancellation on the confirmation screen.
On the Netflix mobile app (iOS or Android):
- Tap My Netflix (bottom right of the home screen).
- Tap the menu icon (top right — the three lines or your profile image).
- Choose Account.
- Select Cancel membership.
- Tap Finish cancellation to confirm.
Watch for retention nudges — Netflix will show you a "Keep my membership" button prominently and a smaller link to continue cancelling. You need to reach the green confirmation screen or the confirmation email to be done.
Step 3 — Cancel if billed through Apple
If your bank statement shows APPLE.COM/BILL, Netflix itself cannot cancel or refund you. Apple controls the billing entirely.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open Settings → tap [your name] at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find Netflix in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
On a Mac:
- Open the App Store and click your name in the bottom-left sidebar.
- Choose Account Settings (or click View Information).
- Scroll to Subscriptions and click Manage.
- Find Netflix and click Edit, then Cancel Subscription.
After cancellation through Apple your Netflix access continues until the end of the current billing period. Netflix will then put your account on hold for 30 days before fully closing it, so you can reactivate without losing your settings if you change your mind.
Step 4 — Cancel if billed through Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Go to Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- Tap Netflix → Cancel subscription.
- Follow the prompts and confirm.
Step 5 — Cancel if billed through a carrier or Xfinity
Some people received Netflix as part of a bundle — T-Mobile Magenta, Verizon + Play More/Get More, or Xfinity X1 / Flex. In those cases:
- Xfinity: log in to your Xfinity account online → Apps & Subscriptions → Manage Services, and toggle Netflix off.
- T-Mobile or Verizon: log in to your wireless account dashboard, find your extras or perks, and remove Netflix. Alternatively, call the carrier's customer service line and ask to remove it from your plan — this is faster.
- Amazon Channels: in your Amazon account → Prime Video → Channels → find Netflix and cancel.
Step 6 — Confirm it's done
A legitimate Netflix cancellation produces a confirmation screen and a confirmation email that states the exact date your access ends. If you don't receive an email within a few minutes, go back to Account → Membership & Billing and verify the status shows Membership cancelled.
You keep full Netflix access until the billing period ends — you won't be cut off immediately.
What if you were still charged after cancelling?
First check your bank statement carefully — the charge may be from Apple or a partner rather than Netflix. If it genuinely came from Netflix after a confirmed direct cancellation, contact Netflix support and provide your cancellation confirmation email as proof. Netflix has processed refunds in error-charge scenarios, though it is not their standard policy. As a last resort, you can revoke payment authorization at your bank the same way you would for any subscription that won't stop charging.
