What Prime costs in Australia (and what you're cancelling)
Amazon Australia runs two Prime products under similar names. Cancelling the wrong one leaves the other charging.
| Plan | Price | Includes | |---|---|---| | Amazon Prime (full) | $59/year or $6.99/month | Free delivery, Prime Video, Music, Reading | | Prime Video (standalone) | Listed separately on amazon.com.au | Just streaming, no delivery benefits |
Before anything else, check Account & Lists → Memberships & Subscriptions to confirm which subscription you're paying for. The same page lists every recurring Amazon charge — useful for spotting trial conversions you forgot about.
Step-by-step: cancel Amazon Prime on amazon.com.au
The desktop path is the cleanest:
- Sign in at amazon.com.au.
- Hover over Account & Lists in the top-right corner and click Prime (or go directly to amazon.com.au/mc).
- Click the Manage Membership drop-down on the right side of the page.
- Select End Membership and Benefits (the link is sometimes worded Update, Cancel and More depending on your account state).
- Click through Amazon's retention screens — each one will pitch Prime benefits and offer to switch you to monthly billing. The cancel option is the small text link or button at the bottom or right; the big centred button is always "Keep my membership."
- On the final screen, choose:
- End on [renewal date] — keep benefits to period end, no refund.
- End Now — end immediately and trigger any eligible refund.
- Confirm. Amazon shows a confirmation screen and emails a confirmation within a few minutes.
The mobile app path: Menu (≡) → Your Account → Memberships & Subscriptions → Amazon Prime → Manage Membership → End Membership — same flow, smaller screen.
The refund rule in Australia
Amazon Australia's policy is straightforward but strict:
- Full refund — if neither you nor anyone you've authorised on the account has used any Prime benefit (delivery on a Prime order, Prime Video, Music, Reading) in the current paid period, you get the full $59 annual or $6.99 monthly fee back.
- No refund — if any Prime benefit was used at all, you keep access to the period end with no refund. Pro-rata refunds are not standard on the Australian Prime SKU.
Refunds arrive on the original payment method within 3 to 5 business days. There are no cancellation fees in either direction.
If you renewed today and immediately realised you didn't want to — and haven't used Prime since the renewal posted — End Now is the option that triggers the refund.
Where Amazon hides the cancel button
If you can't see the End Membership option:
- No Manage Membership drop-down at all? You may be signed in to the wrong Amazon account. Households often have multiple accounts and only one has the Prime membership.
- Page keeps redirecting to a benefits page? Use the direct URL: amazon.com.au/gp/subs/primeclub/account/homepage.html.
- Status already shows "Your membership ends on…"? You've already cancelled — no further action needed. Status flips back to "renews on…" only if you reactivate.
Cancelling Prime Video (standalone) instead
Prime Video standalone in Australia is a separate subscription, not part of full Prime. To cancel it specifically:
- Account & Lists → Memberships & Subscriptions.
- Find Prime Video in the active subscriptions list.
- Click Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Cancelling full Amazon Prime does not cancel Prime Video standalone — they're separate billing relationships. If your card statement shows two Amazon charges per month, you most likely have both.
After cancelling
A real cancellation gives you:
- A confirmation screen with your access-until date.
- A confirmation email within a few minutes.
- A status on the Prime page reading "Your membership ends on…" instead of "Your membership renews on…".
- A refund, if eligible — arrives in 3 to 5 business days.
If you don't get the email after an hour or the page still shows renews-on, the cancellation didn't complete — most likely you stopped one screen before the final confirmation. Re-do the flow.
